Our goal for this month was to stay away from unnecessary chemicals. Realizing there are so many harsh chemicals in our toothpaste, our mouthwash and even in our toothbrushes, how do we keep up our oral health naturally? Keep reading to find out!
We were surprised to find that over use of fluoride (considering we are recommended to brush our teeth 3 times a day) actually leads to dental fluorosis. Dental fluorosis causes discoloration and actually begins to erode teeth and cause the exact thing it is credited with preventing.
White Smile the RIGHT Way!
Fluoride can be found in both our mouthwash and toothpaste, and is also associated with other physical ailments such as osteoporosis, bone fractures, arthritis, thyroid problems, endocrine problems and cancers.
The best way to fight cavities, plaque, and bacteria growth, is to limit processed sugars in your diet. This means soda’s, candies, desserts etc. Mixing processed sugars, and a warm and wet environment (yes your mouth) leads to a bacteria playground!
Eating Parsley, fennel, or anise after a meal can be cleaning and keep your mouth hydrated.
For a toothpaste that will cleanse your mouth and whiten your teeth naturally, use On Guard Toothpaste! It contains Clove, Cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils, all of which have anti-inflammatory properties and provide freshness of breath.
DIY Essential Oil Mouthwash
For mouthwash, we mixed 1 drop of on guard, and one drop of peppermint( for freshness in breath) into 1/2 cup of water. This created a perfect bacteria fighting and refreshing mouth rinse. Swish this around your mouth and gargle if desired, this will pull all the bacteria out of your mouth and throat. Do this for about a minute, and spit out.
Don’t Forget about the Toothbrush!
The next on our hit list was our toothbrushes. Regular toothbrushes are made out of plastic, which isn’t Eco-friendly. Even the softest bristles are harsh on our gums, and constantly brushing with harsh bristles can actually damage your gums and loosen your teeth! We found bamboo brushes made with biodegradable bristles to be gentle, effective and environmentally friendly. We have listed a few of our favorite brands below! Your toothbrush is a major player in keeping your teeth white and chemical free.
Rules for a clean toothbrush
- Keep toothbrush 6 feet away from the toilet.
- Replace brushes every 2 months
- Do not cover the tooth brush head as bacteria will being to grow
