You wake up on a bright, sunny morning.
With a slow stretch and a yawn, you drag yourself out of bed to shower and get dressed for the day.
Your fingers run through your hair and it seems like a little too much has ended up in your palms.
You inspect a little closer. A few split ends. Nothing a trim won’t fix. The edges seem kind of thin too. Your concern level begins to heighten—going from mild to medium.
Then you reach for the back of your head. You realize it’s a little less dense than it ought to be. Your concern level goes from medium to high alarm.
This is how it starts: a receding hairline with thinning strands around the crown of your head. Over time, that area will go bald, but you’ll still have a horseshoe pattern of hair above your ears circling to the lower back of the head.
According to WebMD, up to 95% of men with thinning hair can blame it on male pattern baldness inherited from genes from their parents.
People with this trait can start to lose their hair as early as their teens. In fact, the earlier you begin to lose your locks, the greater the loss will be.
Scientists now think the gene may affect how sensitive your hair follicles are to a hormone called DHT, which makes them shrink. As they get smaller, the hair that grows back tends to be finer, thinner and shorter.
Eventually, it takes longer for hair to grow back. Then, the follicles will shrink so that no hair grows at all.
New hair growth begins in the hair follicle in the dermal layer of the skin. Normally after hairs fall out another hair starts to grow from this same follicle. In baldness, a new hair will not begin to grow from the follicle.
So, what can be done?
There are medications used today that will stimulate the hair follicle growth. But it is also possible to treat hair loss by using natural remedies and making lifestyle changes.
Holistic prevention that can benefit both men and women, who can also inherit the male pattern baldness genes from their parents, include eating well, taking vitamins and taking omega 3’s. Essential oils may also prove highly effective in treating hair loss.
Rosemary is one of the best oils for enhancing hair growth, which thickens the hair. Rosemary oil is believed to increase cellular metabolism that stimulates hair growth.
Cypress oil is perfect for a deep clean, and it’s beneficial to the skin and hair because of its antimicrobial properties.
